Walking the A386

Blog-lite of late. The main reason being that much of my reading, talking, thinking, has been around something I couldn't make public: thoughts about a move into a new place and a different sort of ministry.

Yesterday it became public: that before Christmas this year I will be licensed as Team Vicar in the Northmoor Team, Okehampton, Devon, with special responsibility for the parishes of Lydford, Bratton Clovelly, Germansweek, Sourton and Bridestowe.

The news was received with wailing, groaning and gashing of teeth here in Liverpool. I hope that it went down better in Devon.

Chance for a new start; opportunity to explore pastures new (with my wellies on); replacing "Ok, Lar" with "Oo-arr", scouse suppers with cream teas; learning country ways, walking the A386. It will be different and on our two recent visits there, meeting quite a few of the folks of the five churches, it felt like it will be good.

Diana and I will be living in the rectory at Lydford. If you Google Lydford, Devon or Lydford Gorge you can see what it looks like there. The team has its own website which is worth a look too. Much more on this, doubtless, to follow.

  1. welcome to Devon!!!!!!!
Interestingly, to a part of Devon I hardly know at all, but once you’re settled in I’m sure we can lure you south to the coastal delights!
    Tremendous!!!

  2. Our prayers are with you in this time of change and transition. What does the change mean for psycho-geography and the urban landscape? Have spent the summer on holiday from the emerging church and reading Keri Smith and Richard Mabey back to it now though. Take Care

  3. Sounds like a big change! Ironically, I was up in Liverpool last weekend – my eldest lad has just started studying American History at Liverppol Uni and we were helping him settle into Mossley Hill halls of residence. I know the part of Devon you mention – it’s a lovely part of the world. I wish you and Diana all the best for the future.

  4. Hi John. Just found your Typepad blog.
Wow! This is going to be a bit of change, no? I do hope everything goes well for you in my native county, and that you cope with running five churches. It has its moments! 😉 God bless you in your move.

  5. Hi John, good to see the job is yours! Hope all will go well with the move from scouse land to sheep land. But fancy moving before Christmas! All the best to you and Diana. Blessings, dave and jennie.
